Mission Ayiti

Deemed the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, Haiti ("Ayiti" in Haitian Creole), is unquestionably in need of many things. Despite its poverty, I have witnessed a fraction of Haiti's rich culture, customs and beautiful landscapes.

Among the many needs Haitians express are educational assistance for literacy, language skills and practical job skills. Beyond that, basic needs include potable water, sustainable food practices, clothing, shelter and more. There is no shortage of needs, only shortages of volunteers and supplies.

From a health standpoint, for beginners, many Haitians are malnourished. It is not uncommon for a Haitian to live for several days without even one meal. Children often dig through rubbish and/or collect dirt, mud or stones to find a way to alleviate the pains of starvation. Additionally, foul water, filled with parasites and varied pollutants, creates a whole litany of health concerns.

Thankfully, hundreds and thousands of volunteers stream into Haiti each year bringing supplies and care. Much good has been accomplished. Nonetheless, there is still much more that needs to be done.

My personal efforts involve raising funds for existing missions within Haiti, especially those sustaining the work of native missionaries. I am also working toward gathering donations of goods that can be used in service to Haitians by those native missionaries.

Another of my goals for Haiti includes organizing teams to travel there and provide ancillary support through teaching, well drilling, health care, etc. The greatest of my ambitions is to help fund the building of a multidisciplinary health care facility on the land pictured below. That land (excluding the house) was purchased by a native Haitian missionary who envisions the building of a large clinic or even a hospital. I second his vision.

This new undertaking has pushed me into realms greater than my previous dreams. It is exciting to see projects completed that are leading toward better lives for many Haitians.

I believe that we all can take part, in some way, in efforts to better this world we live in. My efforts have been joined by many others both through my church and my fellowships with Rotarians worldwide.

What world-improving humanitarian niche is calling out to you?
