Is Lack of Sleep Ruining My Health?
by Dr. David L. Wick, D.C.

A 2005 poll by the National Sleep Foundation disclosed that most Americans sleep less than 8 hours per night, many of them getting only 6.8 hours on average. Sleep is a very important time for the body and mind to rejuvenate, but most Americans are spending less time sleeping than the 7 to 9 hours recommended by experts. What can this mean in respect to their health?

In addition to irritability and tiredness, other mental effects of lacking sleep can include forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating. Reaction times are also slowed in those lacking sleep. Additionally, there may be social effects or risks of drowsiness while driving or performing work. These effects can all result from the release of stress hormones when the brain has not had enough rejuvenation through sleep. Continued release of stress hormones over time can have certain harmful risks such as heart disease, diabetes and weight gain.

In states of deep sleep, the body repairs its organs, bones and other tissues. Impaired sleep slows the healing and rejuvenating processes and may contribute negatively to the aging process. Lack of sleep is also suspected in the development and promotion of cancers. If one wants his or her body to function at its best, good sleep for rejuvenation is essential.

Also, in REM sleep (when one dreams), our brains process various emotions and memories. This may have great impact on one's conscious processing as well. Getting good sleep plays a strong role in keeping a healthy emotional balance.

If you are one of the many Americans getting less than the optimal amounts of sleep, you may need to examine the causes. Sometimes, you may quickly correct your sleep patterns by following the tips on my "How Can I Get A Better Night's Sleep?" page. On other occasions, however, some professional help may be needed. Getting adequate sleep is one of the essential components of optimal health and needs to be prioritized by all.
