Recognizing a Heart Attack
by Dr. David L. Wick, D.C.

Heart disease is the nation's number one killer and often develops in silence. Yet, the warning signs of a heart attack should be quickly recognized and treated as a medical emergency. Too often, people do not get medical help soon enough to prevent the worst of heart attack effects. Be aware of the heart attack warning signs and get medical help right away if you or someone you know experiences one or more of the signs.

The American Heart Association lists the following Heart Attack Warning Signs:

  • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs: These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness

If any one of these symptoms is present, call 9-1-1 so the emergency medical service (EMS) can transport to the hospital. The EMS response team may provide lifesaving treatments immediately that would be missed if driving to the hospital by oneself or with someone else. Remember, every second matters!
